Solutions and dissolving

Solute + solvent = solution — and the solute never disappears.

1

Learn it

Describe solutions, explain dissolving and the factors that affect its rate

Idea 1 of 4

The three words

The solute is what dissolves (sugar). The solvent is what it dissolves in (water). Together they make a solution — clear, though not always colourless, and the solute never settles out.

Lab time runs 12× faster.

Is it a fair test?

Yes — only the temperature is different, so any difference in time is caused by it.

On the balance

200 g water + 10 g sugar = 210 g

Watch the reading as it dissolves.

4

A full-marks answer

15 g of salt is dissolved in 200 g of water. What is the mass of the solution? Explain.

Built one line at a time — say the next line before you reveal it

  1. Mass of solution = 15 g + 200 g = 215 g.(add solute and solvent)
