Water and density

Ice floats, salt water boils hotter, and density decides what sinks.

1

Learn it

Describe the unique properties of water and explain floating and sinking using density

Idea 1 of 4

Water's fixed points

Pure water melts at 0 °C and boils at 100 °C at sea level. Dissolving salt in it lowers the freezing point and raises the boiling point — which is why salt is spread on icy roads.
